Escalating Human-Elephant Conflicts in Morada

The Morada block in Mayurbhanj district is witnessing a surge in human-elephant conflicts, leading to significant casualties and property damage. Recently, a tragic incident occurred when a woman lost her life due to an elephant attack near the Astia rubber plantation in the Rasgobindpur area.

The victim, identified as Rina Naik, aged 45, hailed from Poda-Astia village in the Baripada sub-division. She was traveling home with four companions in an e-rickshaw after visiting relatives in Amarda when the incident took place.

At approximately 10:45 PM, as their vehicle approached an electric pole near the Astia rubber plantation along the Baripada–Chitrada–Amarda state highway, a herd of seven elephants was crossing the road. A tusker charged at their vehicle upon noticing it.

While the other passengers managed to escape the auto-rickshaw in fear, Rina remained inside. The driver lost control while trying to maneuver the vehicle, causing it to overturn. The tusker then attacked Rina, inflicting severe injuries.

She was quickly transported to Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital in Baripada, where she succumbed to her injuries around midnight, according to ranger Ghanashyam Singh.

Singh also mentioned that the victim's family has received an immediate compensation of Rs 1 lakh, with a total ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh to follow.
