Strong Opening for The Conjuring: Last Rites
The latest entry in the acclaimed horror series, 'The Conjuring: Last Rites', which draws inspiration from the real-life experiences of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, has made a remarkable debut in Indian theaters. The film grossed over ₹50 crore during its opening weekend, securing the top spot at the box office.
Weekend Earnings Breakdown
Initial trade reports indicate that the film earned a net of ₹17.5 crore on Friday, maintaining the same figure on Saturday, before experiencing a slight decline to ₹15.5 crore on Sunday. This brought the total earnings to approximately ₹50.5 crore within just three days.
Earnings by Language
As per a report from Sacnilk, the English version of the film led the earnings with ₹27.55 crore. The Hindi dubbed version followed closely with ₹18.73 crore, while the Tamil and Telugu versions collectively earned around ₹3 crore.
Third Highest-Grossing Hollywood Horror Film in India
With these impressive figures, 'Last Rites' has now become the third highest-grossing Hollywood horror film in India. It trails only 'The Conjuring 2' (₹61.80 crore) and 'Final Destination: Bloodlines' (₹62.12 crore). Notably, 'Last Rites' achieved this milestone in just three days.
Surpassing Bollywood Releases
Starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, the film features the couple facing a menacing demon haunting a family's home. Its strong opening weekend outperformed recent Bollywood releases such as 'Baaghi 4' and 'The Bengal Files'. 'Baaghi 4' earned ₹31.25 crore over three days, while 'The Bengal Files' managed only ₹6.65 crore. In comparison, the romantic drama 'Param Sundari' reached ₹46 crore in ten days, a figure that 'Last Rites' surpassed in just its opening weekend.
Global Earnings Record
'Last Rites' has also seen significant success internationally, debuting with $187 million (approximately ₹1,560 crore) worldwide. Of this total, $83 million was generated in the US, including $34.5 million on Friday and $8.5 million from Thursday previews. This opening marks the largest for the franchise and ranks as the third biggest global debut for a horror film. The film exceeded expectations in international markets, earning $104 million against an initial estimate of $50 million.
Production and Opening Success
With a production budget of $55 million (excluding marketing), 'Last Rites' recouped its costs multiple times over during its first weekend. It also set a new record for the largest overseas opening for a horror film, surpassing the previous record held by 'It: Chapter Two', which opened at $92.5 million.
