Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor are among the most celebrated stars of Hindi cinema, known for their strong performances and on-screen chemistry. Even at the age of 68, both actors remain active in films — Jackie Shroff often playing intense negative roles, while Anil Kapoor continues to impress with diverse characters.
The two have shared screen space in several classics like Ram Lakhan, 1942: A Love Story, and Parinda. But few know that during the making of Parinda in 1989, Jackie Shroff actually slapped Anil Kapoor 17 times to shoot a single scene.
Why Jackie Shroff Had to Slap Anil Kapoor RepeatedlyIn an old interview, Jackie Shroff recalled this behind-the-scenes story from Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s cult crime drama. He revealed, “The director was satisfied with the first shot and Anil’s expressions were correct. But then he said, ‘One more.’ I slapped him again. He repeated it again and again — in the end, I had slapped Anil 17 times for that one scene.”
Jackie explained that it was necessary to go for real slaps rather than faking it. “You can’t act like you’re slapping in the air. The reaction doesn’t come across. So, I had to actually slap him to make it look authentic,” he said.
The Story of ParindaReleased in 1989, Parinda is regarded as one of Bollywood’s landmark films that realistically portrayed Mumbai’s underworld. The film revolves around two brothers — one who gets trapped in the world of crime and the other who tries to resist it. With hard-hitting drama, gripping action, and powerful performances by Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor, the film went on to achieve cult status and is still considered one of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s finest works.
Despite the physical toll, both Jackie and Anil completed the scene with full dedication, creating one of the most impactful moments in the film.
