Political Unrest in Nepal
Since September 8, Nepal has experienced significant political upheaval as thousands of young citizens rallied in the capital, demanding the government to reverse its abrupt ban on social media and address escalating corruption.
Key platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter) have been inaccessible since Friday due to the government's decision to block 26 unregistered websites. This action has sparked frustration and confusion among the populace, particularly in a nation where millions rely on these platforms for news, entertainment, and business activities.
The Voice of Generation Z
The protests, predominantly led by Generation Z, commenced with demonstrators waving the national flag and singing the anthem, subsequently voicing their opposition to censorship and corruption. This movement raises an essential question: Who exactly constitutes Generation Z?
Defining Generation Z
Generation Z, often referred to as 'Zoomers,' includes individuals born from the mid-1990s to the early 2010s. They follow Millennials and precede Generation Alpha. This cohort has grown up in an era dominated by the internet, smartphones, and social media, making them the first generation to be truly 'digital natives.'
Globally, Gen Z is recognized for being socially conscious, vocal, and politically engaged. They emphasize fairness and accountability, tend to avoid traditional habits like alcohol consumption, are mindful of mental health, and quickly embrace new digital trends.
Catalyst for the Protests in Nepal
The protests erupted in Kathmandu following the government's ban on major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X, a decision that has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organizations. The unrest has already resulted in at least 19 fatalities and over 300 injuries. Primarily driven by Gen Z individuals aged 13 to 28, this unrest marks one of the most severe crises in Nepal's history, posing a threat to the stability of the current government.
