UPI In August: BHIM Surpasses Amazon Pay, PhonePe Continues To Lead

The National Payments Corporation of India’s (NPCI’s) Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) app surpassed Amazon Pay in terms of UPI transactions in August this year. While BHIM processed 10 Cr UPI transactions worth nearly INR 15,000 Cr last month, Amazon Pay saw nearly 9.8 Cr transactions amounting to INR 10,800 Cr.

Based on the transaction volume, BHIM was on the ninth number among the UPI apps in August, according to the data released by the NPCI. However, in terms of transaction value, it was above many leading UPI apps like super.money and FamApp.

Notably, the NPCI rolled out BHIM 3.0 in April this year. The latest version offers 15+ Indian languages and enhanced money management tools like split expenses, family mode, spends analytics, and action needed reminders. BHIM has also been carrying out an aggressive marketing campaign and offering cashbacks for making UPI payments over the last few months.

Meanwhile, PhonePe and Google Pay continued to be the top two UPI apps, processing 915 Cr and 706 Cr transactions, respectively, in August. While the value of transactions processed by PhonePe stood at nearly INR 12 Lakh Cr, Google Pay facilitated transactions worth INR 8.83 Lakh Cr. However, the two players saw a marginal month-on-month (MoM) decline in their market share last month.

Overall, UPI transactions grew 2.8% MoM to 20.01 Bn in August to record a fresh all-time high. On a year-on-year basis, the transaction count jumped 34%.The value of UPI transactions in August stood at INR 24.85 Lakh Cr as against INR 25.08 Lakh Cr in July.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma-led Paytm continued to be in the third position, facilitating 140 Cr transactions worth INR 1.43 Lakh Cr.

Sachin Bansal’s Navi recorded 50.4 Cr transactions worth INR 25,000 Cr, resulting in a marginal increase in its market share. Flipkart’s super.money managed to hold onto its market share with 25.6 Cr transactions.

CRED recorded 15 Cr transactions in August, surpassing the 14.4 Cr figure of July. FamApp, on the other hand, recorded 13.6 Cr transactions worth INR 1,700 Cr.

Yesterday, Inc42 reported that following the ban on real money gaming, UPI transactions under the gaming category took a sharp hit last month. The “Digital Goods: Games” merchant category saw 27.1 Cr transactions worth INR 7,441.1 Cr in August 2025, a decline of 23% and 26%, respectively, compared to July 2025.
