New Directive from the Election Commission
New Delhi: The Election Commission has instructed its electoral team in Bihar to recognize the Aadhaar card as an additional form of identification for voters, in line with the Supreme Court's recent orders.
In a communication sent to the Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar on Tuesday, the Commission stated, "The Aadhaar card will be considered the 12th document, supplementing the existing 11 documents..."
It was emphasized that the Aadhaar card should be used as a "proof of identity and not as proof of citizenship," as per Section 9 of the Aadhaar (Delivery of Financial And Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act.
According to Section 23(4) of the Representation of People Act, 1950, the Aadhaar card is already recognized as one of the documents for verifying a person's identity.
The Election Commission also warned that any failure to comply with this directive or refusal to accept the Aadhaar card will be taken very seriously.
On Monday, the Supreme Court mandated that the Aadhaar card must be included as an identity proof for voters during the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, instructing the Election Commission to enforce this by September 9.
