Proper Placement of Ancestral Photos

It is common for individuals to display images of their ancestors in various locations within their homes, such as the living room, near a temple, or even in the kitchen. However, it is important to note that placing these images incorrectly can lead to complications in life, as suggested by traditional beliefs. Therefore, understanding the appropriate direction and location for these ancestral photos is crucial.

Recommended Location for Ancestral Photos

According to Mahant Swami Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya, ancestral photos should be positioned on the south wall of the house. This direction is associated with Yama, the deity of death, making it the appropriate place for honoring ancestors. He emphasized that these images should not be displayed in the living room, temple, bedroom, or kitchen.

Daily Offerings for Ancestral Photos

It is advisable to have a dedicated, clean room for this purpose, where only family members can enter. The ancestral photo should be placed on the south wall of this room. Swami ji recommends lighting incense sticks daily, offering sesame seeds and barley, and donating water on the new moon day each month.

Worship Method During Shraadh Paksha

During the Shraadh Paksha, the ancestral photo should be removed from the wall and placed on a chair or table covered with a cloth. On this day, a tilak is applied to the photo, and a garland is placed around it. Tarpan rituals should be performed, invoking the names of the father, grandfather, great-grandfather, as well as the mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Swami ji mentioned that during Shraadh, not only are ancestors honored, but offerings can also be made for those who have no descendants. Additionally, feeding a cow is considered beneficial for the peace of the ancestors' souls.

Heartfelt Tarpan Rituals
According to the Puranas, Garuda Ji Maharaj performed the Shraadh for his brother Sampati in a similar manner. The scriptures state that ancestral photos should be displayed for only three generations and in the same room. It is believed that sincere tarpan rituals bring happiness and prosperity to the family.
