Pitru paksha: The time of Pitrupaksha is considered extremely sacred in Hinduism. This period lasts about 16 days from Bhadrapada Purnima to Ashwin Amavasya. During this time, performing of ancestors, pindadan and shraddha have special significance. According to religious beliefs, taking sattvic food in Pitrupaksha is considered auspicious and necessary.
Essential for both religious beliefs and health: Consuming onion and garlic in Pitrupaksha is prohibited. According to the scriptures, these foods fall in the tamasic and sometimes the royal category. Consumption of them not only hinders spiritual practice, but also affects the grace of ancestors.
Importance of Pitrupaksha and Satvik diet
Pitrupaksha is also called Mahalaya Paksha or Shraddha Paksha. During this time, holy and sattvic food is necessary to satisfy the fathers. Satvik diets like fruits, milk, curd, light vegetables and grains keep the body light and keep the mind stable. In contrast, tamasic and Rajasic diets such as onion-garlic increase the restlessness, anger and lust in the mind.
Why keep avoiding onion and garlic
It is said in the scriptures that onion and garlic originated from demons. According to mythology, they were produced by drops of blood falling from the demon’s body during the sea churning. For this reason, they are considered impure and tamasic.
According to Ayurveda, onion and garlic are hot, pungent and stimulating properties. They stimulate the senses and increase anger, laziness, lust. Yogis, saints and saints abandon them and give priority to satvik food, so that there is no hindrance in spiritual practice.
The satisfaction of the fathers and their blessings
With the shraddha performed in Pitrupaksha, the ancestors get peace and salvation in the hereafter. Satisfied ancestors increase the health, age and prosperity of their descendants. Therefore, during this time, you should not forget to consume onion-garlic. It is advisable in the scriptures to take satvic food during Pitrupaksha, so that the grace and blessings of the ancestors remain.
