Mumbai: In Hindu tradition, Pitru Paksha is regarded as a sacred period dedicated to seeking peace and blessings from one’s ancestors. Families across India observe this fortnight by performing tarpan, pind daan and shraddha rituals. Alongside these ceremonies, several simple yet powerful remedies have been prescribed in the scriptures. Among them, rituals performed with the holy Tulsi plant (holy basil) are considered especially effective.
Tulsi holds immense significance in Hinduism as it is believed to be dear to Lord Vishnu. Since Lord Vishnu is considered the ultimate refuge of the departed souls, offerings made through Tulsi during Pitru Paksha are said to instantly satisfy ancestors. These remedies not only bring spiritual relief to forefathers but also ensure prosperity, peace and protection for their descendants.
Remedy 1: Lighting a Lamp and Offering Tulsi Leaves
On any day during Pitru Paksha, devotees should begin the morning with a ritual bath. After this, light a ghee lamp in front of the Tulsi plant. Perform abhishek (ritual bathing) of Tulsi with clean water and offer fresh leaves. Standing beside the plant, remember your ancestors and seek their blessings. Tulsi leaves may also be placed in milk or water and then offered as part of the ritual.
According to belief, this practice pleases the ancestors’ souls, ensuring happiness, harmony and abundance in the household.
Remedy 2: Performing Tarpan with Tulsi and Ganga Water
Offering tarpan (libation) in the Tulsi bed during Pitru Paksha is said to be one of the most effective rituals. After bathing in the morning, stand near the Tulsi plant. Add Tulsi leaves into Ganga water and offer this sacred water while remembering the ancestors. Pray sincerely for their blessings on the family.
It is believed that this combination of Tulsi and Ganga water directly satisfies the departed souls and grants them liberation.
Blessings Through Ancestors’ Satisfaction
Scriptures affirm that tarpan performed with Tulsi and Ganga water quickly pleases the forefathers. Once the ancestors are satisfied, they bestow long life, happiness through progeny and material prosperity upon their descendants. The family home then becomes filled with peace, positivity and abundance.
Why Every Household Should Practise These Remedies
Unlike elaborate rituals, these Tulsi remedies are simple and accessible for everyone. Performed with devotion and faith, they are considered highly rewarding. Believers say they help remove Pitru Dosha (ancestral imbalances) and invite blessings from forefathers, who in turn protect the family from obstacles and misfortunes.
