The death toll from the ongoing Gen Z protests in the Kathmandu Valley has climbed to 34 as reported by The Himalayan Times citing data released by the Ministry of Health and Population of Nepal. The protests began on September 8 2025 in Kathmandu and other major cities including Pokhara Butwal and Birgunj following the governments imposition of a ban on major social media platforms citing concerns over tax revenue and cybersecurity reported news agency ANI. While the country of Nepal is already entrenched in poverty it is suffering massive loss and destruction due to the violent uprising. What is Nepal’s only passenger train known for? Nepal has a weak infrastructural network: a country with 147516 sq km 30 million people and only one passenger train. According to a Zee News Hindi report there are only two operational railway lines in Nepal. Nepal has only one passenger train and one freight train. The passenger train rail line is the Jayanagar-Bhangaha Passenger Line and the freight line runs on the Raxaul-Sirsia Freight Line. Where does this train operate in Nepal? The report further mentioned that Nepal has only one passenger train service between Jayanagar and Kurtha a narrow-gauge railway that covers 59 km (36.7 miles) from Janakpur (Nepal) to Jayanagar (India). India’s Konkan Railway has built this rail route in Nepal. What type of coaches are available on this train? While Indias Vande Bharat trains operate at speeds of 180-200 km/h Nepals fastest train takes 2 hours to travel a mere 36 km at barely more than 40 km/h. This means one could probably reach the destination faster even by an auto rickshaw. What type of coaches are available on this train? The fare of this train in Nepal will also amaze you. Operating between Jayanagar and Kurtha the train has one AC coach and the others are regular passenger coaches. What is the seating capacity of the train? It is seating for 300 people. The best part is that you do not even require a reservation; just stand in line at the ticket window on the platform to purchase your ticket. On the Nepal train a sleeper coach ticket sells for Rs 56.50 while an AC coach ticket reportedly sells for Rs 281 the report further mentioned. This rail route was built during the colonial period under British rule.
