We are heading towards the last quarter of 2025 and it has been a lukewarm year for Bollywood. There have been a plethora of duds at the box office, the most recent being Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 4 which even failed to get an opening. If we look at the Bollywood Box Office trends since post-pandemic, many films have had such a fate with barely even an opening to speak of. However, there have also been successes that have made people to stand up and take notice.
Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava was a mega blockbuster at the ticket windows and is by far the highest grossing Bollywood film in India this year. The epic drama collected over Rs 600 crore net in India and had unprecedented numbers for an outright Hindi film with the overall figures only being bettered by Allu Arjun’s record-breaker Pushpa 2. The other big success of the year was completely unexpected by the trade and audiences – Saaiyaara – which zoomed past Rs 300 crore net. It continues to hold the second spot although there were expectations of the Hrithik Roshan-NTR Jr film War 2 eclipsing it. Unfortunately, the latest installment of the Spy Universe from Yash Raj Films couldn’t even breach Rs 250 crore net in India.
The action thriller opened to reasonable numbers but after the initial weekend that also had holidays in it, the film sank without much of a fight. The verdict from public is clear – they seem saturated with the repetitive tone and content from Spy Universe films and YRF will need a game-changer in its coming releases if they are to keep this universe intact. War 2 ended at fourth spot, below the dubbed mythological animation film Mahavatar narsimha which went on to collect Rs 247 crore net in India. It showed that the Bollywood audiences are yearning for good content, be it entertainment-driven or story-driven, but the outright Hindi films are barely delivering on that front.
Shah Rukh Khan, who had a sensational run in 2023, didn’t have a release in 2024 and 2025 is also likely to be the same while his peers in Salman Khan and Aamir Khan both failed to attain a blockbuster with their respective releases. Salman’s Sikandar didn’t even take off, despite being an Eid release and became one of the superstar’s biggest debacles while Aamir’s Sitaare zameen par got him some acclaim and reasonable box office success although the blockbuster tag remained elusive. Even in terms of numbers, Sitaare zameen par did far lesser than the quintessential Aamir Khan film, putting the trade into disbelief. Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn are, despite their huge of work, stars with limitations in stardom, so it is unreasonable to expect them to churn out mammoth numbers.
Nevertheless, Devgn’s Raid 2 and Kumar’s Sky Force were moderate successes at the box office with the former doing better business than Sitaare zameen par too.
