Disciplinary Measures in CPI(M)

Kozhikode: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kerala has demoted K.T. Prameela, the President of Thalakkulathur Panchayat, to a branch-level member due to her involvement in a religious ceremony and participation in an RSS event.

Prameela, who has also been a member of the area committee, attended a function where a newly built house was handed over to a needy family, coordinated by Union Minister of State for Tourism, Suresh Gopi.

The party's decision was based on her actions, which they deemed as breaches of CPI(M) discipline, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining ideological consistency among members.

This incident is part of a broader trend of controversies in Kerala involving public figures and religious imagery.

Previously, state ministers P. Prasad and V. Sivankutty faced backlash for perceived violations of protocol.

Agriculture Minister Prasad missed a state-level inauguration at the official residence of Kerala's Governor, Rajendra V. Arlekar, while Sivankutty left a meeting, disregarding established protocols regarding the Governor's attendance.

In another incident, a 'Bharatamma' (Bharat Mata) image was displayed at a private event in the Kerala University office complex, where Governor Arlekar was the chief guest.

Despite being informed by the university registrar that the event was canceled, the Governor went ahead with the inauguration, resulting in the registrar's suspension.

CPI(M) insiders suggest that actions like Prameela's demotion are intended to uphold party discipline and convey that any ideological deviations, no matter how small, will not be accepted.

However, critics argue that such disciplinary actions could alienate grassroots leaders and hinder social engagement efforts.

Prameela's involvement in the house key-handover ceremony, aimed at assisting a poor family, has drawn mixed reactions, underscoring the intricate balance between political loyalty, social service, and ideological adherence in Kerala's multifaceted political environment.
