Households urged to put beautiful plant in bathrooms to get rid of mould and bad smells

Plant-filled rooms have 50 to 60 % fewer airborne moulds and bacteria than rooms without plants, and if there is one room in your house that can benefit from their benefits, it is surely the bathroom.

But there is one particular plant that not only thrives in the high humidity bathrooms provide, which in turn helps to keep the plant's leaves lush and vibrant, but it also works hard to improve the environment.

These particular plants act as natural air purifiers, removing mould spores and toxins from the air and reducing the need for frequent watering. Thus, they are low-maintenance and beneficial additions to a steamy, low-light bathroom environment.

And while the bathroom is one of the most difficult places to sustain live plant life, it is also one of the spaces most in need of green plant life. Green life in a bathroom will make it feel more comfortable, welcoming, and well-kept-and smell better, too!

So what is this magical plant that will save on using so many nasty and often expensive cleaning and air-freshening chemicals?

The Peace Lily, or the big spathiphyllum, to give it its other name, is a beautiful house plant that gives off a sophisticated spa vibe. Its pure white flowers and tropical leaf shapes help to create a more relaxing environment.

It is originally from the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, particularly Colombia and Venezuela, where it grows on forest floors near rivers and streams. It was introduced to Europe in the mid-1800s and has since become a popular houseplant known for its lush foliage and distinct white "flowers"

The Peace Lily also helps to purify the air in bathrooms by filtering common toxins like formaldehyde and benzene from the environment, and can even reduce mould spores in the atmosphere.

According to Marie Harrison at Garden Guides: "Indoor air is becoming increasingly more contaminated with trapped pollutants. This makes the use of living plants indoors more necessary than ever before."

And while the bathroom is one of the most difficult places to sustain live plant life, peace lilies thrive in that environment. The Peace Lily is adapted to life on the tropical forest floor and therefore it does not require much light. It will flower more vigorously if it receives some indirect bright light, but the attractive foliage will thrive in lower light conditions as well. The Peace Lily also thrives in humid environments.

The humidity in bathrooms and kitchens is usually a bit higher than other rooms making them the perfect place for a Peace Lily.

Garden Guides lists the Peace Lily among several plants that are able to absorb mould and mildew. It is often a concern that indoor plants will produce allergy-inducing mould, but in fact, if watered correctly, the Peace Lily will reduce mould spores found in the air. It is important that the soil supporting a Peace Lily does not remain soggy so that mould growth on the soil surface is prohibited. Peace Lilies are more drought-tolerant than moisture-tolerant. It is better to err on the side of not enough water than too much.

Marie concludes: "The next time you are searching for the perfect plant for a bathroom or simply need to freshen up some stale air, don't forget the power of the Peace Lily. Even though it is a common houseplant, the Peace Lily can still be stunningly beautiful. With the right container and space for display, the Peace Lily can effectively freshen up any environment."
