Sri Lanka began their Asia Cup 2025 journey with a convincing six-wicket win over Bangladesh in their Group B match at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. A steady half-century from Pathum Nissanka and an unbeaten 46 from Kamil Mishara helped the team chase down a target of 140 with 32 balls remaining showing clear control in both batting and bowling departments. How was the chase? Chasing what seemed like a challenging total on a slow pitch Sri Lanka lost Kusal Mendis early. However Nissanka and Mishara quickly settled things taking charge of the innings. Nissanka played smartly finding gaps with ease and punishing bad balls to reach a well-earned fifty. Mishara continued his impressive start in international cricket. The 23-year-old left-hander remained not out again following up his previous performance with a calm 46* supporting Nissanka perfectly. Though Kusal Perera scored only 9 off 9 and captain Dasun Shanaka managed just 1 from 3 balls the chase remained steady. Charith Asalanka wrapped things up in style with a big six off Tanzim Hasan Sakib finishing on 10* from 4 balls as Sri Lanka sealed the win comfortably. How did Bangladesh bat? Earlier Bangladesh struggled after being asked to bat first. Nuwan Thushara and Dushmantha Chameera started strong with the new ball leaving Bangladesh at 0/2 after two wicket-maiden overs. Thushara bowled out Tanzid Hasan Tamim with a brilliant delivery while Chameera had Parvez Hossain Emon caught behind soon after. A sharp direct hit by Kamil Mishara ran out Towhid Hridoy leaving Bangladesh at 11 for 3. Captain Litton Das tried to stabilize the innings with a 28 from 26 balls but Wanindu Hasarangas double strike reduced them to 53 for 5 by the 11th over. It looked like Bangladesh might not even reach 100 but Shamim Hossain (42* off 34) and Jaker Ali (41* off 34) put together a solid unbeaten 86-run stand — the highest sixth-wicket partnership for Bangladesh in men’s T20Is — taking the total to 139/5. Was the chase easy? However Sri Lanka chased the target with ease. Thanks to Nissanka and Mishara’s solid efforts the team secured a dominant win and sent a clear warning to other teams in the group. For Bangladesh a late batting recovery wasn’t enough as their bowlers couldn’t defend the small total. What are the brief scores? Bangladesh – 139/5 in 20 overs (Shamim Hossain 42* Jaker Ali 41*; Wanindu Hasaranga 2-25 Dushmantha Chameera 1-17) Sri Lanka – 140/4 in 14.4 overs (Pathum Nissanka 50 Kamil Mishara 46*; Mahedi Hasan 2-29 Tanzim Hasan Sakib 1-23) Result – Sri Lanka won by six wickets.
