Leopard Attack in Pauri District
In a heartbreaking incident in the Choubattakhal area of Pauri district, Uttarakhand, a leopard attacked a four-year-old girl, resulting in her death, as confirmed by a forest official on Saturday.
According to reports, the girl named Riya was playing on her home's balcony when the leopard pounced on her and dragged her away on Friday evening. Akash Verma, the Conservator of Forests for Garhwal, stated that the child's mother chased after the leopard while screaming, but the animal left the girl in a field about 50 meters from their home before fleeing. Tragically, by the time family members arrived at the scene, the girl had already succumbed to her injuries.
Upon receiving the news, teams from the administration, forest department, and health department rushed to the location. It was noted that Riya was the youngest of two sisters, and her family was preparing to celebrate her birthday on September 17, with her father, Jitendra Singh Rawat, having traveled from Mumbai for the occasion.
Verma mentioned that a team from the forest department has been deployed in the area, where two traps have been set up to capture the leopard. Additionally, three more traps are being installed.
The girl's funeral was postponed until Saturday evening as the family insisted on a directive to kill the leopard. Subsequently, the divisional forest officer of Lansdowne, Jivan Mohan Degde, reassured them about the ongoing efforts to capture the animal. Local residents have reported frequent leopard sightings in the area and urged the government to take special measures to ensure public safety.
