If you hold an Aadhaar card but have not linked your mobile number to it, or if your old number is inactive and you haven’t updated the new one, it’s time to act fast. Without an updated and active mobile number linked to your Aadhaar, you may be unable to access government welfare schemes, banking services, or complete online verifications.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) issues the 12-digit Aadhaar card, which serves as one of the most critical identity documents in the country. It is accepted not only as proof of identity but also as proof of address. Therefore, an active mobile number linked with Aadhaar is essential for availing almost every online service, subsidy, or government benefit.

Why Is a Registered Mobile Number So Important?

The Aadhaar ecosystem heavily relies on OTP-based authentication. Unless your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar, you will not receive OTPs required for online transactions, e-KYC processes, or government portal verifications.

This means you won’t be able to:

• Complete subsidy or scheme registrations.

• Carry out online banking transactions securely.

No More Online Updates for Mobile Numbers

Earlier, Aadhaar cardholders could update their details such as name, address, and mobile number online through the UIDAI portal or the mAadhaar app. However, this feature has now been discontinued.

Now, mobile number updates or additions can only be done offline. You must physically visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK) to complete the process. While the update itself is offline, you can save time by booking an appointment online through UIDAI’s website.

How to Book an Online Appointment for Updating Aadhaar Mobile Number

Follow these steps to schedule your visit:

1. Go to the official UIDAI website and select your preferred language.

2. Navigate to My Aadhaar → Get Aadhaar → Book an Appointment.

3. Choose your location/city and click on Proceed to Book Appointment.

4. Enter the mobile number already linked to Aadhaar (if available), fill in the captcha, and generate an OTP.

5. Verify the OTP and provide your Aadhaar number, name, date of birth, state, and city details.

6. Under the update section, select New Mobile Number.

7. Choose a convenient date and time slot according to your availability.

8. Confirm the booking, and you’ll receive appointment details.

At the Aadhaar Seva Kendra, you will be required to submit your biometric verification (fingerprint/iris scan) and pay a nominal fee for updating your mobile number.

With the government increasingly shifting welfare schemes, subsidies, and services to digital platforms, an Aadhaar-linked mobile number has become a gateway to essential benefits.
