Artificial Intelligence (AI) is affecting jobs around the world. With the advent of AI, the ways of working are changing, due to which many types of jobs will be eliminated in the coming times. But experts believe that not every job will be taken over by machines. There will be some professions that will remain far away from the reach of AI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has recently revealed this in an interview.
Altman said on The Tucker Carlson Show that in the coming years, jobs like customer support will be rapidly replaced by AI. According to him, "Most customer support jobs on the phone or computer will be eliminated and AI will do this work better."
These jobs are at greater risk.
Altman believes that AI can give faster, consistent, and accurate answers than humans. Already, millions of questions are being answered by AI chatbots and virtual assistants. In such a situation, jobs related to customer support will be reduced. However, according to a 2025 survey, 81% of customers still prefer to talk to a human. But Altman warned that as AI gets better, this number may decrease.
Confusion over software engineers
The most interesting thing is related to software engineering. Altman said that AI has become so advanced that now any non-expert can create a website or app with simple prompts. But the irony is that sometimes the presence of AI can also slow down the productivity of experienced developers. He said, "Right now, the demand for software is very high. But what will it look like in the next 5-10 years? I am not sure whether there will be more jobs or fewer?"
These jobs will not be affected.
Altman said that jobs related to customer service will be affected, but nursing and human connection professions like psychiatrists or physiotherapists will stay away from AI. Altman said, "Even if AI or robots give the right advice, patients will still want to get care from humans."
DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis also said in an interview with Wired that AI can help doctors, but cannot replace nurses. At the same time, Geoffrey Hinton, known as the 'Godfather' of AI, has suggested that people should take training for jobs in which human hands and experience are important, such as plumbing.
Change must be embraced, not run away from it.
Altman's clear message is that instead of fighting AI, humans will have to focus on their qualities like creativity, judgment, and compassion. He believes that in history, too, 50% of jobs have changed every 75 years; this time, too, the change will be sudden, but not impossible.
Experts believe that the safest jobs in the future will be those that require human advice, empathy, and problem-solving abilities. Roles such as caring for patients, solving real-world problems or deep thinking will remain safe.
