More than 900,000 people have signed a petition calling for a General Election, as Sir Keir Starmer's government lurches from one crisis to another.
The Prime Minister was given a stonking majority by the British electorate last July, but since then his administration has been mired by rebellions from his own MPs and devastating scandals that have called into question his judgement. Now, hundreds of thousands of voters want another poll to allow people to decide whether they want to keep Labour in office.

The petition, created by Nicola Cree says: "We want an immediate general election to be held. We think the majority need and want change." At the time of writing, it has been signed by 908,868 people - well over the 100,000 required to be considered for debate in parliament.
The poll comes with Sir Keir battling to retain control of the narrative around his leadership. In the same week that his team launched "phase two" of his government, Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Labour Leader Angela Rayner was forced to resign over failing to pay the correct amount of stamp duty on an £800,000 property in Hove.

Then, Lord Mandelson, the UK ambassador to the US - appointed by Sir Keir - had to be sacked by Number 10 after it emerged that he had supported Jeffrey Epstein in the wake of the paedophile financier's conviction for child prostitution.
As Labour's popularity plummets, Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage continues to enjoy a commanding lead in the polls.
According to Politico's Poll of Polls, the insurgent right-wing party is on 31 points, with Labour on 20% and the Conservatives on 16%.
Responding to the call for an early election, the Government responded: "This Government was elected on a mandate of change at the July 2024 general election. Our full focus is on fixing the foundations, rebuilding Britain, and restoring public confidence in government."
