Step 1: Choose the Right Pot and Soil
To start, select a pot that is at least 12 to 14 inches in size, as this will provide enough space for the plant’s roots to grow. Prepare a good quality potting mix by combining 50% garden soil, 30% coco peat (or coir), and 20% compost or well-rotted cow dung. This mixture ensures good drainage and provides essential nutrients.
Step 2: Planting the Seeds
Take healthy capsicum seeds and sow them about half an inch deep into the soil. It’s a good practice to plant 2-3 seeds in each pot to increase the chances of germination. Once the seeds sprout and the seedlings are a few inches tall, you can thin them out, keeping only the healthiest plant in the pot.
Step 3: Location and Sunlight
Bell peppers are sun-loving plants. Place your pot in a location that receives at least 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight every day. A sunny balcony, terrace, or a windowsill are ideal spots. Proper sunlight is crucial for the plant to thrive and produce fruit.
Step 4: Watering
Water the plant regularly, especially during the warmer months. The soil should be kept consistently moist but never waterlogged, as excess water can cause root rot. Check the soil with your finger; if the top inch feels dry, it’s time to water.
Step 5: Fertilizing
Once your capsicum plant reaches a height of 6-8 inches, you can start fertilizing it to support its growth. Use an organic liquid fertilizer or a handful of compost every 15-20 days. This will provide the necessary nutrients for the plant to produce a good yield of healthy peppers.
Step 6: Pest Control
Bell pepper plants can be susceptible to pests. To protect your plant from common pests like aphids and whiteflies, prepare a simple organic solution. Mix a tablespoon of neem oil with a litre of water and a few drops of dish soap or washing powder. Spray this mixture on the leaves every 15 days to keep pests at bay.
With these simple steps, you can enjoy fresh, homegrown bell peppers right from your balcony. Happy gardening!
