Synopsis

Brigitte Macron, wife of French President Emmanuel Macron, is fighting back against false gender rumors. She plans to give scientific proof and old photos to clear her name. The case is linked to U.S. influencer Candace Owens, who spread these claims online. The court fight now aims to stop the rumors and protect her family.

Brigitte Macron to show proof in US lawsuit over false gender claims
Brigitte Macron and her husband, French President Emmanuel Macron, are preparing to show scientific and photo evidence in a U.S. court case against American right-wing influencer Candace Owens. Candace Owens, who has millions of followers, has repeatedly claimed Brigitte, 70, was born male and even alleged she is secretly her brother Jean-Michel Trogneux, while saying her first husband never existed, say reports.

In March, Owens said she would "wage her entire professional reputation" on these claims. The Macrons’ lawyer, Tom Clare, told the BBC "expert testimony that will come out that will be scientific in nature." "She is firmly resolved to do what it takes to set the record straight," he added, as stated in the reports, as stated by The Sun.

Clare confirmed that photos of Brigitte pregnant and with her children exist, and these will be shown in court. Clare admitted "It is incredibly upsetting to think that you have to go and subject yourself to put this type of proof forward". The couple filed a 218-page lawsuit in Delaware in July seeking damages. The lawsuit accuses Owens of launching a “campaign of global humiliation” and “relentless bullying”.

In a joint statement, the Macrons said they gave Owens many chances to retract her false claims, but she refused. "Ms Owens' campaign of defamation was plainly designed to harass and cause pain to us and our families and to garner attention and notoriety. "It is our earnest hope that this lawsuit will set the record straight and end this campaign of defamation once and for all", as per the report by The Sun.

Candace Owens defamation

Owens’ lawyers filed a motion to dismiss the case, saying Delaware is the wrong location and that defending there would cause financial and operational hardship. Owens has defended her claims as free speech and says she still believes them. The rumors first started in 2021 when French far-right magazine Faits et Documents published them.

Bloggers Natacha Rey and Amandine Roy pushed the claims in a viral YouTube interview. In 2024, the Macrons initially won a defamation case in France, but it was overturned this year due to freedom of expression rules. President Macron has angrily denied the claims, calling them “false and fabricated”, as mentioned in the report by The Sun.

Family support and Macron’s strong denial

On International Women’s Day, Macron warned that lies and fake scenarios are dangerous because people eventually believe them. Brigitte’s uncle, Jean-Louis Auzière, testified earlier that he worked with her until the late 1980s and confirmed she is not a man. Her daughter, Tiphaine Auzière, also criticized the rumors, saying she worries about society when such false claims about her mother spread online.

For President Macron, the issue is personal, and he said it is about defending his honour against someone knowingly spreading lies. The U.S. case will focus on whether Owens acted with “actual malice” — meaning she knowingly spread lies or ignored the truth, according to the report by The Sun.
