NPS to UPS Switch: If you're a central government employee and want to switch from the National Pension System (NPS) to the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), there's some good news for you. The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has clarified that employees can now apply online as well as offline, i.e., through physical forms.
In fact, the Finance Ministry implemented UPS on January 24, 2025, and the deadline was set for September 30, 2025. As the deadline approaches, PFRDA has stated that employees experiencing difficulties due to technical reasons or the unavailability of the online platform can submit the completed form to their nodal office.
PFRDA stated, "All applications received by the nodal office by September 30, 2025, will be accepted as per the established procedure." This means that if you choose UPS, your convenience will remain intact even if you experience online difficulties. However, employees who remain in the NPS will not be able to join UPS after the deadline.
Government Requests: Don't Wait for the Deadline
Previously, the Central Government had issued a major update regarding the UPS for employees and retired officers. The Finance Ministry has clearly stated that employees or retired officers who wish to transition from the National Pension System (NPS) to the UPS must exercise their option by September 30, 2025.
The Ministry has requested that employees not wait until the last minute to avoid any difficulties in the application process. Once the deadline has passed, employees who remain in the NPS will not be able to join UPS.
You Can Make the Change with These Four Conditions
The Department of Financial Services (DFS) under the Ministry of Finance issued the UPS notification on January 24, 2025. Subsequently, another Office Memorandum was issued on August 25, 2025, allowing the transition from UPS to the NPS. However, this transition is subject to four strict conditions. The conditions are as follows:
1. Employees can switch from UPS to NPS only once and cannot switch back to UPS again.
2. The switch must be made at least one year before retirement or three months before voluntary retirement.
3. If an employee is facing disciplinary action, or has been removed or suspended, they will not be eligible for this facility.
4. Employees who do not opt in within the deadline will automatically remain in UPS.
