The new BMW iX3, unveiled at the IAA Mobility show in Munich, is considered a blueprint for the future of the brand because it is the first production model of the ‘Neue Klasse’ (New Class) era. It represents a significant reset for BMW, showcasing transformation in three key areas: electrification, digitalisation, and circularity.

Electrification

The iX3 is built on a dedicated EVfirst platform, which allows for optimal design and packaging. This contrasts with the previous iX3, which was based on a modified internal combustion engine (ICE) platform. It also sets new benchmarks for electric SUVs with a WLTP range of up to 805 km (500 miles) and a peak DC charging rate of 400 kW.

Digitalisation

The iX3 debuts a completely new user interface. The traditional iDrive controller is gone, replaced by ‘BMW Panoramic iDrive’ which integrates a number of new technologies, such as BMW Panoramic Vision (a new display projects information across the full width of the windscreen), ‘Superbrains’ (the car’s electronics architecture is built around four ‘superbrain’ highperformance computers), and ‘Shy Tech’ controls (the multifunction steering wheel features ‘Shy Tech’ haptic controls that are only visible when they are available for use).

Circularity

The iX3 launches a new design language for BMW. It’s described as “reduced to the essence of the brand,” with cleaner surfaces, precise lines, and a return to more classic vertical kidney grille proportions. This design will be replicated across the future Neue Klasse models.

The iX3 is a major step in BMW’s commitment to sustainability, as onethird of the vehicle is made from secondary raw materials, including recycled PET fabrics and reclaimed maritime plastics.

Will it come to India?

While there’s no official confirmation from BMW India, the iX3 is expected to be launched here in early 2026. The car could be locally assembled at BMW’s plant near Chennai.
