Deep Look: Josh Allen, Terrel Bernard Power Bills to 31-21 Win Over Dolphins
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Quarterback Josh Allen delivered another commanding performance and linebacker Terrel Bernard made the game-saving play, as the Buffalo Bills stayed unbeaten with a 31-21 win over the division-rival Miami Dolphins on Thursday night.
With just under three minutes remaining and Miami in scoring position, down by a touchdown, Bernard perfectly read quarterback Backdauilou’s pass and stepped in front of receiver Jaylen Waddle at Buffalo’s 12-yard line. The interception, Buffalo’s only takeaway of the game, sealed the win and extended the Bills’ recent dominance over the Dolphins.
Rookie defensive tackle Deone Walkerfilling in for injured veteran Ed Olivergot his hands up and deflected the pass — a critical assist on the game-clinching turnover.
Allen Efficient, Defense Steps Up Late
Allen once again proved to be a Dolphins nemesis, completing 22 of 28 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns. He connected on a go-ahead 15-yard score to Khalil Shakir midway through the fourth quarter, five plays after a costly penalty on the Dolphins kept the drive alive.
On a fourth-and-7 punt from midfield, Miami’s Zach Sieler was flagged for roughing punter Cameron Johnstongifting the Bills a new set of downs. Buffalo capitalized and never looked back.
The Bills improved to 3-0while the Dolphins dropped to 0-3 — their worst start since 2019.
Cook Breaks the Dolphins’ Defensive Streak
Running back James Cook delivered a milestone performance, racking up 108 rushing yards and a 2-yard touchdown. His effort made him the first player in 36 games to rush for 100 yards against Miami — a streak that had dated back to 2022.
Cook also extended his personal streak to seven consecutive games with a rushing touchdown, tying a franchise record held by Oj simpson, Cookie Gilchristand one other player.
Dolphins Competitive But Undisciplined
Despite the loss, Miami moved the ball well. Tagovailoa went 23-of-34 for 146 yards and two touchdowns — one each to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Rookie back Ollie Gordon added a short rushing touchdown.
But penalties, missed tackles, and the late turnover plagued a team desperate for a win. The Dolphins converted 10 of 15 third-down attemptsyet could not overcome self-inflicted errors.
Head coach Mike McDaniel, now facing increasing criticism after an 0-3 start, was direct postgame:
Since guiding the team to the playoffs in his first two seasons, McDaniel’s record has slipped to 8-13 since a Wild Card loss to the Chiefs in 2023.
Buffalo Continues Division Dominance

Buffalo’s offense was sharp, with Dalton Kincaid scoring on a 20-yard catch and rookie Jackson Hawes grabbing his first career touchdown on a 5-yard strike from Allen while the quarterback was rolling to his right.
