ABC10 shooting: Shots fired after Jimmy Kimmel suspension causes public outrage
Mirror | September 20, 2025 5:39 PM CST

A lobby window of an ABC affiliate in California was hit by gunfire on Friday, according to authorities.

Police rushed to the ABC10 building in Sacramento shortly after 1:30 pm when a passing vehicle opened fire before speeding away.

Whilst the exact number of shots remains uncertain, police spokesman Anthony Gamble confirmed that "it does appear at least three rounds did strike the building." Nobody was hurt and the motive stays unclear. Officials have no description of the attackers.

Footage from the scene showed the window had at least three bullet holes, reports the Mirror US.

The incident followed protesters gathering outside the station to oppose ABC's decision to suspend veteran comedian and late-night presenter Jimmy Kimmel's programme after his remarks about the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Police said it remains unclear whether there's a direct link between the shooting and the demonstrations.

A group of ABC-affiliated stations said it would not air the programme, citing the remarks broadcast less than one week after the killing as the reason.

Speaking this week, President Donald J Trump said Kimmel was fired because "he had bad ratings" and is "not a talented person". Several Hollywood figures have spoken out about Kimmel's suspension, including Ben Stiller and Hacks' Jean Smart. Stiller said the suspension wasn't right, whilst Smart wrote on her Instagram: "What Jimmy said was free speech, not hate speech." Kimmel himself hasn't commented.

The suspension of Kimmel's show is the latest in a series of feuds between Trump's administration and the media. Trump has reached settlements with CBS and ABC over separate stories and his case with CBS is rumoured to be the reason the Late Show with Stephen Colbert was cancelled after 11 seasons. Trump has also launched legal action against the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

President Donald Trump welcomed Kimmel's suspension. Trump commended ABC for "finally having the courage to do what had to be done." Kimmel had particularly focused on the alleged gunman, Tyler Robinson.

"The MAGA Gang (is) desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it," Kimmel said in his Monday monologue. "In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving."

ABC's decision to suspend Kimmel follows FCC Chairman Brendan Carr labelling his remarks as "truly sick."

Sinclair, the broadcasting company which makes up the US' largest ABC affiliate group has issued a string of conditions they want met before they will screen Jimmy Kimmel Live! again.

According to People magazine, Kimmel has been ordered to apologise and make a "meaningful personal donation" to Charlie Kirk's non-profit if he wants to return to air.
