I don’t often get a chance to review helmets (even though I should considering the profession I am in) mostly because of commitments involved around my daily routine. Studds Accessories reached out to me and offered a helmet of my choice to review it. For the uninitiated, Studds has had very limited interaction with the media fraternity until a couple of months ago.
While Studds suggested the recentlylaunched Helios range to me, I had different thoughts. I wanted a helmet which is affordable and more suitable for daily needs. And hence, I opted for the Trooper range. Studds was kind enough to send me the Trooper D4 with the Race Decor and matte finish.
Studds Trooper D4 helmet review: Features
The Studds Trooper D4 Race is a versatile flipup helmet designed primarily for urban commutes. The helmet comes with a dualvisor setup, comprising a clear outer visor and an internal sun visor to provide optimal visibility across varying light conditions. It is designed with dynamic ventilation channels that enhance airflow, while the quickrelease chin strap ensures ease of use.
For added comfort and hygiene, the interior padding is crafted from hypoallergenic fabric and is both removable and washable. As for safety, it comes with twin certifications — the mandatory ISI along with DOT. Further, Studds has used regulated density EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) that is lightweight. This rigid foam crushes and dissipates energy during a crash. Studds has also provided a spoiler for better aerodynamics although it comes as a detachable unit.
Studds Trooper D4 helmet review: My opinion
For starters, the Studds Trooper D4 looks just fantastic in this Race spec matte finish with dual–tone black and blue graphics along with red lines which add the sporty flair to the motorcycle. The overall quality of materials and colours used are more than decent although I did find a couple of small cases of untidy finishes on the outer shell that need to be addressed.
The helmet fits in beautifully and is extremely comfortable to wear thanks to the multilayered liner inside. The padding is thick enough to absorb the impact and keep your head insulated from outside disturbances. However, make sure you choose the right size for the best fitment as I ended up choosing a size too large. The buckle and chin strap are solid with the latter offering more than enough leverage for a variety of face shapes.
There are two ventilation slots available — one on the chin guard and the other on top of the outer shell — that are just adequate but could be better. You will end up all perspired and gasping for breath after a prolonged riding session. At 1375g, it is slightly on the heavier side but doesn’t feel so while wearing it.
Studds Trooper D4 helmet review: Verdict
The Studds Trooper D4 Race is an ideal choice for those who seek a helmet that covers more than the basic standards of safety, looks and feels good, and more importantly doesn’t pinch the pockets. Listed at a price of Rs 2,190 on the Studds official website, interestingly, this model hasn’t officially gone on sale at the time of filing this report.
