Online gaming ban: Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav made a big announcement and said that India’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 will be implemented from October 1. This is the same law that banned the online money gaming industry of about 23 billion dollars last month. Along with this, digital personal data protection (DPDP) Rules of Act, 2023 have also been prepared, which the government will notify by 28 September. Both laws will bring strict compliance rules in the coming days.

Decision after long talks with industry

Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that before implementing this law, the government discussed several rounds with online money gaming companies and banks. Negotiations were going on between the industry and the ministry for almost three years. According to the minister, “The rules will be implemented from October 1, but before that there will be another meeting with the industry. If the companies want extra time, the government will consider it.”

The most important concern is about the return of the user balance. For this, the government has prepared a solution with banks and companies so that users can get their money back within the stipulated time. The official made it clear that this problem would not be a hindrance in the implementation of the law.

Effect on jobs and companies

Under the law, now all money-based gaming activities, payment, promotion and advertisements will be completely banned. The industry claims that this will eliminate about 2 lakh jobs and can close about 400 companies. However, the government said these figures exaggerated. According to the ministry, only more than 2,000 employees are directly employed in the region.

Effect on common people

After the announcement, big companies like Dream11, Gameskraft, Games24X7, MPL and Baazi have started closing their real-mani gaming operations. Millions of users were active on these platforms. At the same time, the petitions to this case have been rejected by Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Delhi High Court and now the matter is pending in the Supreme Court. Also, the industry is awaited for the Supreme Court’s decision on heavy tax demand imposed by the Center.

DPDP Act path

The foundation of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 was laid in the year 2018, when it was introduced as a Personal Data Protection Bill. Justice B.N. The committee headed by Shri Krishna prepared it. After several amendments and discussions, it was introduced in Parliament on 3 August 2023 and the President’s approval was received on 12 August 2023.

Now the government has made it clear that the first rules will be notified and after that a detailed FAQs guideline will be issued, so that companies and common citizens can easily understand the first privacy law of India. The official said that all preparations are complete and rules will be issued by September 28.
