Amazon Issues Advisory to H1B Employees After Trump Visa Decision

Uncertainty has increased in the US about H-1B visa holders. Meanwhile, Amazon, the largest employer of H-1B visa holders, has issued special counseling to its employees. The company has said, “If you have H-1B visa status and you are in America, then stay in the country at the moment.” Amazon’s warning note further stated that “H-1B and H-4 visa holders return to America before midnight (EDT) on September 21.” The consultation came after a strict visa decision taken by US President Donald Trump recently.

Trump signed a proclamation on Friday (19 September) (local time), under which a huge fee of $ 100,000 will be imposed on the H-1B visa application. This rule will be effective from September 21 and will remain in force for the next 12 months.

Prior to Amazon, Microsoft and JPMORGAN have also warned their H-1B and H-4 visa holders. Microsoft said in his message, “We strictly recommend that H-1B and H-4 visa holders return to America tomorrow.” At the same time, the external immigration council of JPMORGAN has advised that H-1B holders should stay in America and avoid international travel till further instructions come.

Significantly, the H-1B visa holders have more than 70% Indians. A large number of Indian professionals work in tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft. In such a situation, this new rule can affect the Indian IT sector and Indian diaspora the most.

This step of Trump administration can have a profound impact on the future of foreign professionals working in America. Big tech companies are currently advising their employees to adopt safe options, but in the coming months this decision may also affect Indo-US business relationships.
