Bullet train project: The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Project has taken another big step forward. Construction of 4.881 km long tunnel between Ghansoli and Shilfata has been successfully completed. This tunnel is built from NATM (New Austrian Tunnel Method) and is part of the 21 km long sea tunnel from BKC to Shilfata. In this sea tunnel, 7 km is being built under Thane Creek. In May 2024, the first breakthrough was achieved in July 2025, after which this continuous section was ready.

Amazing of engineering

The internal width of this tunnel is 12.6 meters and it will be connected to the viadct part of the MAHSR project. During the construction work, drilling and blasting, survey and ground support system were accurately used. Even under difficult geological circumstances, engineers completed the work by adopting the best technical solution. Additional intermediate tunnel (ADIT) was constructed to speed up this process, making it possible to dig simultaneously from both sides. Now in the next phase, a 16 -km long tunnel will be built from the tunnel boring machine (TBM), which will be a single tube of 13.1 meter diameter and will be laid by double tracks.

Security and modern technology strengthened construction

Special attention has been paid to both security and technology during tunnel construction. The site has equipment such as ground settlement markers, peasmeters, inculinometers and strain gauge so that the surrounding structures are not damaged. Fresh air supply for workers, measures to prevent unauthorized entry and monitoring system have also been implemented. These arrangements not only made construction safe but also maintained the speed of the entire project. Now this tunnel is moving towards final stages like lining, finishing and equipment installation.

India’s first bullet train dream come true

Construction work is going on fast on the 508 km long corridor from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. So far, the work of 321 kilometers of vialect and 398 km of pear has been completed. 17 river bridges and 9 steel bridges are ready. Construction of 206 km track beds and more than four lakh noise barriers have been installed. More than 2000 OHE masts have been erected, which cover the 48 km main line Viadcts. The infrastructure work at all stations in Gujarat is in the final stages, while the base slab casting work is going on fast at the Mumbai underground station in Maharashtra.
