Heavy traffic in Glendale caused delays for hours as thousands of people arrived at State Farm Stadium for the Charlie Kirk memorial Sunday morning, September 21.

Traffic congestion began before 5 a.m. on westbound Interstate 10 and northbound Loop 101 toward Glendale Avenue. Arizona Department of Transportation cameras documented long lines of vehicles in outer lanes approaching the Glendale area.

Glendale Avenue experienced complete gridlock with slow-moving traffic and pedestrians walking between cars to reach State Farm Stadium. Stadium doors opened at approximately 7:40 a.m. as crowds continued arriving for the Charlie Kirk memorial.

The heavy traffic congestion forced hundreds of attendees to abandon vehicles on area freeways and walk toward State Farm Stadium on foot.

  • Cardinals Way is closed between 99th Avenue and 91st Avenue. Loop 101 on- and off-ramps are closed.
  • Maryland Avenue is closed between 95th Avenue and 91st Avenue. Loop 101 HOV ramps are closed.

Serious crash compounds traffic problems near stadium

A serious head-on crash closed Bethany Home Road between 63rd Avenue and 67th Avenue, according to the Glendale Police Department. The collision occurred around 6:30 a.m., approximately four miles from State Farm Stadium.

One driver was extricated and transported to a hospital in critical condition. Another person was transported with less severe injuries. The roadway remained closed for investigation as detectives worked the scene.

Federal aircraft arrivals expected to impact Phoenix area traffic

Freeway congestion lessened later Sunday morning with traffic moving on Interstate 10 and Loop 101 in the West Valley. Additional traffic delays are expected as Air Force One, Air Force Two and at least one other federal government plane arrive in the Valley ahead of the Charlie Kirk memorial.

As of 10 a.m., 35 flights were reported as delayed at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, though it remains unclear if those delays are connected to the incoming federal aircraft.
