Especially for female artists for whom the field of acting has always been challenging. Actress Durga Khote is one such example of struggle and perseverance. She not only distinguished herself in the world of acting but also gave a new direction to her life while fulfilling her family responsibilities. Early Life and Struggles Durga Khote was born on January 14 1905 into a prominent Brahmin family in Maharashtra. At a time when working in films was considered a social stigma for women she challenged this notion. Marriage and Tragedy Durga Khote was married at just 18 to Vishwanath Khote a successful mechanical engineer. Within a few years she became the mother of two children but fate had other plans for her. When Durga was just 20 her husband passed away. Financially ruined Durga Khote looked for work to support her children. Beginning of Her Acting Career Having an education she began tutoring but when she received film offers she accepted. Her first film Farebi Jaal (1931) was a failure. However director V. Shantaram recognized her talent and offered her the role of Taramati in the film Ayodhyacha Raja (1932). Rise to Stardom This made her a star overnight. She subsequently starred in films like Maya Machhindra Bharat Milap Mughal-e-Azam Bobby and Karz proving herself adept at every genre of acting. She appeared in over 200 films bringing dignity to the role of a mother in Indian cinema. Contributions and Legacy She also founded a production house called Fact Films and made several short films. In recognition of her contributions she was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Durga Khote passed away on September 22 1991 at the age of 86. But the path she paved has remained an inspiration for generations to come. Story Highlights Durga Khote broke social taboos as a female actor in early Indian cinema.
