Estonia Triggers NATO Article 4 Over Russian Jet, UN Security Council to Meet Monday

Following Estonia’s request for immediate discussions under Article 4 of the alliance’s founding treaty, the debate will now take place. According to Article 4, any member may convene an emergency meeting if it feels that its security, political independence, or territorial integrity is in danger. The meeting on Tuesday will be the ninth time in NATO’s 79-year history that Article 4 has been used, and the third since Russia began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In addition, Estonia announced that the UN Security Council would convene Monday to discuss the Russian jet invasion.

Later on, however, Russia vehemently denied violating Estonian airspace. The aircraft was flying on an approved flight path, carefully following international airspace regulations and without crossing any other nation’s boundaries, the Russian Defense Ministry said. The government said the aircraft passed over the neutral Baltic Sea, nearly three kilometers away from Vandaloo Island in Estonia.
