As the colder months approach, excess moisture and condensation can become common problems. In addition to mould and damp, it can also make drying clothes in the home very difficult. While some people opt for heated airers, others swear by dehumidifiers for speeding up the drying process.
There are plenty on the market but the Devola 12L compressor dehumidifier is drawing high praise from users and is currently reduced in price on the Devola website, taking it from £158.95 to £114.95.
Compressor models like this one draw in damp air and remove the water through a condensation process - the air passes over refrigerated coils and the resulting droplets collect in its inbuilt tank - before the machine pushes out the dry air. They work best in rooms kept at a regular temperature, such as living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens. (This one isn't recommended for any spaces that drop below 5° Celsius.)
This model claims to extract up to 12 litres of moisture per day and uses 185 watts of power, which Devola says works out at around 5p per hour based on current electricity costs.
The unit includes a two-litre tank with auto shut-off when full, or users can hook up the included continuous drainage hose to avoid frequent emptying (though note that will need to go into something else, like a bucket so is not the most aesthetic solution!).
Noise is kept to a maximum of 36 dB, which is quieter than normal conversation and similar to background noise in a library, so it can run without being too intrusive.
The dimensions are (H)47cm x (D)22cm x (W)25.5cm, so its relatively compact and while at 10.5kg, it isn't light, castors make it easy to move between rooms. It also has a washable dust-proof filter to help reduce allergens and maintain clean airflow, a timer, child lock, and a digital humidistat that shows current humidity via coloured display lights. Warranty is one year standard, or two years if you register. It also has a laundry setting, which many reviewers say is effective.
Buyers of the machine have been extremely impressed, with one on Amazon writing: "It's not too noisy, haven't run it in the bedroom overnight but have had it running whilst watching tv and it's not too bad. The performance is excellent. Was caught in a downpour: jeans, trainers, jumpers soaked through. Maybe 7pm. Popped everything in the bathroom and put this on continuous and was all bone dry by the next morning. You will honestly be surprised at the amount of moisture this removes!"
Another satisfied customer added: "This has transformed the way I dry my washing, wish I had bought one years ago. Speeds up dry time and stops the house being full of condensation. Not too big, sits in the corner of the room, not noisy, cheap to run."
Of course, not every user was impressed. One wrote: "Efficient at collecting the water, however, the water tank is very difficult to remove, when full, and so I have spillage on the carpet each time it requires emptying."
