New Face in Luv Kush Ramlila
This year's rendition of the beloved Luv Kush Ramlila at the iconic Red Fort in New Delhi features a fresh addition to its cast. Actress Poonam Pandey has been chosen to portray Mandodari, the wife of Ravana. However, her casting has sparked protests from certain political factions.
Arjun Kumar, the Chairman of the organizing committee, shared with a local media outlet, "Poonam was enthusiastic about taking on the role when we approached her. She expressed that playing Mandodari has been a dream of hers, and she is grateful to Lord Shri Ram for this opportunity. She has been diligently rehearsing to deliver a captivating performance in front of a large audience."
Poonam Pandey's Background
Poonam Pandey is known for her roles in films such as Karma – The Journey and GST: Galti Se Sirf, along with appearances in the television series CID and the reality show Lock Up.
Despite her enthusiasm, not everyone agrees with her selection. Praveen Shankar Kapoor, who leads the Delhi BJP media cell and serves as a senior vice president of the Ramlila Committee, has formally requested the organizers to reconsider their choice. Additionally, Surendra Gupta, the state president of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, has voiced his objections to Pandey's casting.
Concerns Raised
Kapoor expressed concerns, stating, "Pandey has been absent from the film industry for a significant period and has faced controversies related to her social media presence."
In defense of the decision, Arjun Kumar responded, asserting, "We believe that having a woman portray a positive character in Ramlila should not be seen as problematic. Every artist deserves a chance to shine."

The Luv Kush Ramlila, a highlight of Delhi's cultural calendar, commenced on September 22 and will run until October 3. Poonam Pandey is set to perform as Mandodari on September 29 and 30, alongside over 500 other artists.
