Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa is reportedly preparing to slash over 600 jobs according to Bloomberg citing a Business Day report. The company has started a consultation process and issued notices of potential retrenchments to affected workers but a final decision is yet to be made. Coca-Cola Layoffs The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) has strongly opposed the proposed layoffs raising concerns about South Africa’s already fragile job market. Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa established in 2016 through the merger of six non-alcoholic bottling businesses is going through pressure to streamline operations amid difficult market conditions. The move could affect South Africa’s unemployment crisis already among the worst globally. Several other major firms like Ford Motor Co. Glencore Plc and ArcelorMittal SA have recently announced job cuts. Layoffs Global Trend Adding to the pressure the 30% tariff imposed by the US on South African exports under President Donald Trump’s administration threatens nearly 100000 jobs in sectors like automotive and agriculture according to the South African Reserve Bank. The planned jobcutts are similar to the current global wave of layoffs across industries from tech and manufacturing to consumer goods. Companies worldwide are cutting jobs to streamline operations offset inflationary pressures and adapt to automation and AI adoption. While some firms point to strategic restructuring others are reacting to sluggish demand weaker growth forecasts and cautious investor sentiment.
