Synopsis

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, celebrated by Jews worldwide with prayers, special foods, and family gatherings. It begins the High Holy Days and leads to Yom Kippur. People reflect on the past year, hope for a good year ahead, and follow traditions like blowing the shofar and eating apples with honey. It is observed in the U.S. today.

The Jewish New Year, known as Rosh Hasanah, is slated to commence from Monday dawn. It’s the lead up to the Jewish day of atonement, also known as Yom Kippur, one of the major religious days of the Jewish calendar. The literal translation of Rosh Hashanah, a Hebrew term, in English is”head of the year” and is a cause of celebration among the Jews with celebrations including family dinners and prayers, Freeps reported.

The holiday lasts two days, from sunset on Sept. 22 to dusk on Sept. 24, both inside and outside Israel. This 48-hour celebration is called yoma arichta, meaning “a long day”. The exact date varies each year because it follows the Hebrew calendar, beginning on the first day of the seventh month, usually in September or October.

The Jewish new year is also considered a time of reflection, says Jordan Rosenblum, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with Jews around the globe also calling it the “birthday of the world,” as it’s considered the day when humanity was born. Jewish Legends depict the day as the birthdate of Adam and Eve, and multiple services at synagogues are undertaken.

Rosh Hashanah traditions

Some communities blow a shofar, a curved ram’s horn, to signal the new year. The holiday encourages believers to reconcile past conflicts and start fresh. Some Jews perform a Tashlich ceremony, praying near water and tossing bread or food to symbolize sending off sins, according to the report by Freep.

The cuisines and delicacies which are savoured around the world on Roshan Hashanah include the traditional honey dipped apples, pomegranates and Challha bread. Most of these cuisines reflect some message related to the festivities, with pomegranate reflecting 613 commandments in the Torah and the bread representing cycles of life. People greet each other in Hebrew around the world, using the phrase ‘Shanah Tovah’.

However, there is no trend of fasting among the Jews on Rosh Hashanah. The Jews in Michigan stood at 129,000 in 2024, a sizable chunk of 7.69 million Jews residing in the US. The High Holy Days, also called the “ten days of awe,” began on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, Sept. 22. The New Year marks the start of ten days of repentance, ending with Yom Kippur on Oct. 2, as stated by AL.com.

The Book of Life in Jewish tradition represents God writing names during Rosh Hashanah and sealing it on Yom Kippur. Temple Emanu-El Rabbi Adam Wright said living Jewishly today requires determination, courage, and unity, acknowledging challenges while maintaining hope, as per the reports.
