The celebrated theatre play Siachen, penned by renowned playwright Anwar Maqsood, has been revived at the Karachi Arts Council after nearly ten years, presented in a fresh new format that resonates with current realities.

Directed by Dawar Mehmood and produced by Wajih Wasim under the banner of Copycats Production, the play is scheduled to run until September 30, 2025,

Although the original storyline remains intact, the play has been updated to reflect the recent conflict between Pakistan and India, particularly the May 2025 war, giving the narrative a renewed urgency and relevance.

Siachen shines a light on the harsh lives of soldiers stationed at the unforgiving Siachen Glacier, where they endure freezing temperatures and difficult terrain to fulfill their duties. This revival explores the futility of border disputes and underscores the vital importance of peace.

The play portrays the personal lives of soldiers through four interconnected stories: a mother and son, a husband and wife, a brother and sister, and a romantic couple. These narratives poignantly highlight the emotional toll of separation from family, missing celebrations like Eid and weddings, and the sacrifices soldiers and their loved ones make.

True to his signature style, Anwar Maqsood weaves gentle satire throughout the play, touching upon the military, politics, cricket boards, and historical figures. This blend of humor and critique invites audiences to both laugh and reflect deeply.Siachen carries a powerful message that while borders are man-made, culture and emotions unite the people of both nations. Through references to films, songs, and dramas, it emphasizes that people on either side of the border are not so different.

One particularly moving scene features a Bihari Indian soldier who mistakenly crosses into Pakistani territory. His performance, accent, and demeanor authentically capture the plight of those caught between hostile borders.

The set design is lauded for its impressive recreation of the icy, challenging environment of Siachen, immersing the audience in the harsh reality of the glacier.

Performances by the cast, especially their accurate use of Pashto accents and character depth, add further emotional weight to the production.

Originally staged in 2016, Siachen’s return after nearly a decade with updated content and renewed vigor has once again captivated audiences, reminding them of the human costs behind political conflicts.
