Shreyas Iyer will take a six-month break from red-ball cricket due to recurring back issues, the BCCI confirmed on Thursday. The India batter made the decision after experiencing back spasms and stiffness following recent surgery in the UK. Despite this, he will captain India A in the three one-day matches against Australia A, while Rajat Patidar has been named skipper of the Rest of India squad for the Irani Cup.
Why did Shreyas Iyer ask for a break?
As TOI reported, Iyer, who will turn 31 soon, spoke with chief selector Ajit Agarkar about his struggles with first-class cricket. "Iyer spoke to Agarkar and conveyed that it's getting tougher for him to endure the rigours of first-class cricket. He is experiencing some discomfort in his back. That's why he has pulled out of the India 'A' match," a BCCI source revealed to TOI.
The break will give Iyer time to work on his fitness and build strength, addressing concerns over his recent form. He has struggled with the bat, scoring just 25 and 12 in the Duleep Trophy and 8 in India A matches.
Iyer will lead the India A team in a three-match one-day series against Australia A in Kanpur, starting September 30.
Meanwhile, the Irani Cup gets underway in Nagpur from October 1, with Rajat Patidar captaining the Rest of India squad against Ranji Trophy champions Vidarbha.
Rajat Patidar (C), Abhimanyu Easwaran, Aryan Juyal (WK), Ruturaj Gaikwad (VC), Yash Dhull, Shaikh Rasheed, Ishan Kishan (WK), Tanush Kotian, Manav Suthar, Gurnoor Brar, Khaleel Ahmed, Akash Deep, Anshul Kamboj, Saransh Jain
