Improving Lung Health in a Polluted Environment
Enhancing Lung Function: The surge in air pollution has become a pressing concern, adversely affecting lung health. Factors such as excessive smoking and poor dietary choices are also contributing to lung damage. Health professionals report a notable rise in respiratory conditions, including asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer, and COPD. In regions like Delhi-NCR, pollution levels, particularly in winter, can become alarmingly high. It is crucial for individuals to adopt healthier habits to mitigate the risk of lung diseases. On World Lung Day, we explore expert advice on how to bolster lung health.

Dr. Bhagwan Mantri, a Senior Pulmonologist at Dr. Mantri Respiratory Clinic in Saket, New Delhi, shared insights on the escalating lung disease rates attributed to polluted air, smoking, and unhealthy lifestyles. Indoor pollution, tobacco use, and a lack of physical activity are significant contributors to compromised lung function. These factors have led to a worrying increase in patients suffering from severe respiratory diseases, including asthma and lung cancer, with a concerning number of young individuals affected.
Experts emphasize that urban air pollution poses a serious threat to lung health. Harmful particles from vehicles, industrial emissions, and construction sites can directly enter the lungs, causing damage. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with asthma, are particularly at risk. Additionally, harmful substances like tar and nicotine in cigarettes can severely harm lung cells. Chronic smokers face a heightened risk of developing lung cancer and other respiratory ailments, while even passive smoking can lead to lung damage.
Dr. Mantri advises that a diet high in oily, processed, and junk foods can exacerbate lung inflammation. Accumulated fats and toxins can diminish lung capacity. Incorporating antioxidant-rich foods such as apples, grapes, green vegetables, turmeric, and ginger is vital for lung health. A balanced diet plays a crucial role in respiratory well-being. Regular physical activities like yoga, walking, and pranayama can significantly enhance lung function. Specific breathing exercises, particularly Anulom-Vilom and Kapalabhati, are effective in cleansing the lungs and boosting oxygen levels. Engaging in at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily is essential for maintaining strong lungs.
Health professionals warn that viral and bacterial infections, such as flu, pneumonia, and COVID-19, can further compromise lung health. Preventive measures like wearing masks, frequent handwashing, and vaccinations are crucial. Persistent coughs or breathing difficulties should not be overlooked; consulting a doctor for assessment is advisable. If you experience symptoms like shortness of breath, coughing, or fatigue, a pulmonary function test may be necessary. Prioritizing clean air, a nutritious diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking can significantly contribute to long-term lung health.
