Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that BJP will not get the result as it expected but will do better than last time in Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC).
Voting took place for the 40 member BTC in Assam on September 22. The counting of ballots will take place on September 26.
Sarma on Thursday in Guwahati said, “Last 72 is very crucial in the campaign period but we could not participate in the election process due to sudden demise of singer Zubeen Garg, we came back to Guwahati, camped here and start arrangements mainly for his cremation and return of the body.”
He added, “The way we worked in the entire period we expected a very good result but the last three days was setback for all of us. Perhaps we will not get the result the way we expected but our result will be better than last year. Congress will not get a single seat, and all the 40 seats will be divided by NDA partners.”
He added that however only two among us will combine to form a government. Either United Peoples’ Party-Liberal (UPPL) and BJP will form the government, or Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF), and BJP will form government or UPPL and BPF may form government.”
Sarma said, “I am sure BJP will be there in the government and how results will come will determine how things will go. The result was very important politically for BJP however in may we have sacrificed the BTC election. We were hardly involved in the last three days, owing to the prevailing situation several Assamese people did not cast their votes, youths from that place came to Guwahati.”
Sarma said that BJP is discussing various probabilities if UPPL is close to majority and BJP supporting from outside, BJP will have no role if UPPL and BPF forms government.
Promod Boro, the chief executive member (CEM) of BTC and leader of UPPL said that he is confident that the party will romp back to power. The UPPL leaders were in Chirang.
Boroa said, “ We will be the single largest party.”
There are around 316 candidates, and polling took place in 3,359 polling stations across the five districts -- Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Tamulpur and Udalguri. BTC is the sixth scheduled council under the Constitution of India.
Sarma has run a high voltage campaign in the area for several days.
BJP is a partner in the council where regional party UPPL is leading the council. Another party which is in opposition in the council BPF is supporting the NDA government in Assam.
This election assumes significance as it is the last election before the next year’s assembly polls in Assam.
In the 2020 polls BJP contested 24 seats and won nine seats. In this election BJP contested 30 seats. Congress is also contesting all 40 seats. Both the regional parties have put candidates in all the 40 seats each.
The relationship between BPF and BJP turned bitter and both parties fought the 2020 council elections separately.
In 2006 and 2011, BPF was part of the Congress-led government in Assam. In 2014, before the Lok Sabha polls, the party parted ways with the Congress. In 2021 fought assembly polls in alliance with Congress. However later BPF started supporting NDA in the state assembly.
The 2020 election to the 40-member council had resulted in fractured mandate with BPF emerging as the single largest party with 17 seats. However, BJP and UPPL supported by Gana Suraksha Party (GSP)formed the government of council. Lone congress member left the party and joined BJP.
