Spider season is still in full swing, with the pesky insects continuing to be most active until mid-October. During this time, male spiders leave their nests, and venture indoors to seek mates.
As spring 2025 was so warm, it has led to higher insect populations, and provided spiders with more food. This means this spider season, they may have been more noticeable around your property; however, if you don't like them and think they've become a bit of a problem, it turns out there's a simple way you can keep them out of your home and you only need one ingredient to pull it off.
According to Anna Louisa, who shares all sorts of home hacks on TikTok, you can keep spiders away by using one common spice. If you scatter it at entry points around your house, it can help to keep spiders away.
In a candid video, she shared three tips to help people, and they could make a really big difference. Anna said: "The first one is to spray around your windows with peppermint oil and water.
"They also dislike the smell of cinnamon, so dotting some cinnamon sticks around your home will keep them away too. Finally, adding orange oil to your mop will also help. The bonus to this one is it will keep other insects out too."
Since the video was shared, it's been viewed over 100,000 times, and people were quick to comment. They shared all sorts of experiences when it comes to trying to deter spiders.
One said: "I swear by peppermint oil." Another added: "I loves these tricks."
A third replied: "These are very good tips, but they are not cat friendly at all." Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "Thank you, I'll try it."
Someone else also chimed in with: "They also don't like conkers. My mum has little pots with conkers in to keep them out and, to be honest, they look so cute."
Others suggested it's good to have spiders in the home, while some praised the tips for being so simple to test out. It must be noted that, if you have pets, the methods are best avoided as ingredients like peppermint oil can be toxic to them.
How does cinnamon prevent spiders?Cinnamon can help to deter spiders as they don't like the strong scent of the spice. It can irritate the sensitive hairs on their legs.
Spiders detect their environment using sensitive hairs on their legs, and cinnamaldehyde in cinnamon angers these hairs, telling them it's a bad place to inhabit.
You can use it around the home by sprinkling ground cinnamon or placing cinnamon sticks near entry points like doors and windowsills. Another method you can try is soaking cotton balls in cinnamon oil and placing them in spider-prone areas.
You could also add it to cleaning solutions for floors or create a spray bottle solution. The only thing you need to bear in mind is that cinnamon sticks can stain white surfaces, so be mindful where you position them.
Cinnamon is considered a preventative measure and may not work to rid an existing infestation; however, it can stop spiders from invading your home in the first place, so it's worth giving the method a try.
