He said, “I have never faced such a painful situation in my life… My mind is full of worry and my heart is full of pain.” Vijay had already declared a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the victims and demanded a fair and independent inquiry into this tragic accident. He said, “We need to bring out the truth so that such an accident does not happen again.”
Karur police on Tuesday arrested another person in the case. Pavunraj used to arrange flags and flex banners for the TV’s party campaign. Earlier, the party’s Western District Secretary Mathiajhagan was arrested. So far two people have been arrested in this case. The stampede took place during the rally on 27 September. Eyewitnesses said that there was chaos due to sudden power failure, and people ran towards the exit gate. The incident killed 41 people including women and children, while 110 were injured, out of which 51 have now recovered.
Initially, Karur Deputy Superintendent of Police Selvaraj was handling the matter. The state police leadership later handed over a high-level investigation to Additional Superintendent of Police Premanand.
Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed deep grief and promised to bring justice to the victims. He appealed for restraint, saying, “Speculations and irresponsible comments will only hurt the mournful families.”
At the same time, opposition leader Edappadi Palaniswami demanded accountability from DMK and questioned the security protocol. He said, “This horrific event reflects administrative failure. The government should answer why the security protocols were not implemented.”
