
On the day of Gandhi Jayanti, the country lost a true Gandhian and freedom fighter. Dr. G. Yes. Parikh, also known as the “Saint of Socialists”, died at the age of 100 on Tuesday (2 October) at the residence in Nana Chowk in Mumbai. He was not only a soldier of the freedom struggle, but also one of the prominent activists who revive the Khadi movement, cooperatives and rural industries.
Travel from freedom struggle to Gandhism
Dr. Parikh had made the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi the basis of life in his youth. While a student of St. Zevirs College, he actively participated in the 1942 Quit India Movement and also arrested. In 1946, he established a center to promote Khadi and Village Industries in Mumbai.
Social and political contribution
In 1960, along with his wife Mangalaben Parikh, he established a Yusuf Mehrali center in Tara village in Raigad district, which played an important role in the empowerment of tribal communities. He was a supporter of socialism, secularism values throughout his life.
Dr. Parikh was the chairperson of the Mumbai Village Industries Association (MVIA) and also actively involved in the revival campaign of Khadi Bhandar in 2024. In May 2024, he reached the polling station at a wheelchair and voted, proving that his loyalty to democracy persisted till the last breath.
