After the independence of the country, the Supaul assembly seat of Bihar, which has been a stronghold of the Congress, has been occupied by JDU for the last 25 years. Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav, a minister in the Bihar government, has been constantly being elected MLA from this seat since 2000, his victory remains an impregnable fort for other parties.

Actually, this seat comes under Supaul district and Lok Sabha constituency. Supaul was first voted in 1952, when Congress’s Lahtan Chaudhary was victorious. From 1967 to 1972, this seat was with the Congress. Bijendra Prasad Yadav won this seat for the first time on Janata Dal ticket in 1990, since then his victory has been established.

In 1990 and 1995, he was elected MLA from Janata Dal. However, in 2000 he was elected MLA from JDU ticket for the first time.

According to the Election Commission, in the 2020 assembly elections, Bijendra Prasad Yadav defeated Congress’s Minnatullah Rahmani by 28,099 votes. In that election, JDU’s vote percentage was more than 50, while the Congress got more than 33 percent votes.

According to the Election Commission, in the 2020 assembly elections, Supaul seat had a total of 2,88,703 voters, which increased to 3,07,471 by the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The voting percentage in the 2020 assembly elections was 59.55%. Among the decisive voters of this seat are the share of Muslim community more than 20%, the Yadav community is 16.5%, Scheduled Castes 13.15%, and urban voters 15.05%.

It is being told that this area has been a part of Mithilanchal since Vedic period. The Kosi river flows from the middle of the district and most of the here is affected during the flood.

If we look at the economic and social scenario of Supaul, this area is dependent on agriculture, where paddy, maize and pulses are the major crops. However, the most damage to the region is due to floods. Industrial development is limited here. In 2006, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj included Supaul in 250 most backward districts in India, which also gave special assistance.

The upcoming election contest in Supaul is expected to be interesting in Supaul between the strong alliance of the NDA and the opposition’s ‘India alliance’. Although Bijendra Yadav’s established popularity and JDU’s strong base indicate continuity, opposition solidarity may introduce new challenges.
