Japan is going to meet a woman Prime Minister for the first time. In fact, the process of Prime Minister’s election is going on in Japan, which was voted on Saturday. In this voting, former Japanese Economic Security Minister Sane Takichi was elected the leader of the country’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

After being elected the leader of LDP, she will now take oath on 15 October. According to local media reports, none of the five candidates got a majority in the initial period in the party leadership race. In the second round of voting after this, Takaichi got 185 votes, while Koizumi got 156 votes.

In the first round of the election, Takiyi took the lead with a total of 183 votes, with 64 party MPs and 119 general members support. According to The Japan Times report, Koizumi got 164 votes, with 80 party MPs and 84 general members supported him.

LDP MPs started voting for the new leader in the day itself, in which five candidates were involved in the race to become the new party chief and the next Prime Minister of the country.

Apart from Sane Takaichi, former LDP general secretary Toshimitsu Motegi, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and Takayuki Kobayashi were also contenders. These five candidates were also included in the last year’s election, in which the record nine candidates submitted their claim.

Let me tell you, a total of 590 votes were cast in the first round of the election that began after LDP President Shigeru Ishiba’s resignation last month, of which 295 were of LDP MPs and 295 votes were allotted to general members and registered supporters of the party.

Slow speed of development, rising prices and rapid devaluation of yen were an election issue. Apart from this, the dual defeat of LDP has brought its leadership under the purview of strict monitoring.

As the ruling party is losing its historical dominance, the way ahead is becoming equally difficult for it. LDP will have to assure people in this difficult time that keeping a divided party united, handling a minority regime, and assuring modern voters that LDP is still able to form a stable government.
