Police in China have arrested two tourists for carving characters in the bricks of the Great Wall, a UNESCO heritage site.

A staff member from Gubei Water Town, a popular tourist area near Beijing, reported on Friday that the tourists, both locals, had etched characters while touring the Simatai section of the Great Wall, Global Times reported.

In response, police launched an investigation and apprehended the suspects on Saturday morning, Chinese news site Zaobao reported.

The investigation revealed that the tourists arrived at the scenic area around 2:00 p.m. on Friday. By 4:30 p.m., they had used stones to carve their names into a beacon tower, later adding patterns.

Both individuals have been given administrative penalties, including detention and fines, as stated in a notification released by the Miyun police on its official WeChat account.

Police also reminded tourists to respect cultural relics, adhere to tourism etiquette, and refrain from vandalism while visiting the Great Wall.

The Great Wall was built over centuries by China’s emperors to protect their territory. It begins in the east at Shanhaiguan in Hebei Province and ends at Jiayuguan in Gansu Province in the west.

In May, two tourists from Shanghai were detained for five days and fined 200 yuan ($28) each for carving graffiti onto the Badaling section of the Great Wall in Beijing.
