BSNL VoWiFi explained: Call from basements, rural areas with weak signal

New Delhi: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has rolled out a new feature that could help many users struggling with weak signal problems. The state-owned telecom operator has launched its Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) service in select circles, allowing subscribers to make voice calls even when mobile coverage is poor.

This launch comes as part of BSNL’s wider efforts to expand its 4G presence and marks its 25th year of operations. With this move, BSNL joins private operators like Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, who have already been offering Wi-Fi calling for a while. For people living in areas where signal drops are common, this feature might be a game-changer.

What is BSNL VoWiFi

The VoWiFi service lets users make calls using a Wi-Fi or broadband connection instead of relying only on mobile networks. This means that even in basement apartments, rural homes, or buildings with poor signal, a user can still call without interruption as long as the phone is connected to Wi-Fi.

To use this service, an active BSNL SIM is required along with a smartphone that supports VoWiFi. Most 4G and 5G Android and iPhone models already have this option under the call settings. No additional apps or accessories are needed. However, older devices that lack the feature will not work.

How to activate VoWiFi on BSNL

  • Users need to connect their smartphone to a stable Wi-Fi network such as home broadband.
  • The latest software update should be installed to ensure compatibility.
  • In phone settings, the VoWiFi or Wi-Fi calling option can be switched on.
  • Once enabled, calls automatically route through Wi-Fi when mobile signals are low.

BSNL has clarified that this service will be completely free. In a post on its official X handle, the company confirmed there will be no extra charges for calls made over Wi-Fi.

BSNL’s VoWiFi availability and rollout

At the moment, BSNL’s VoWiFi is being launched in select South and West zone circles. A nationwide rollout is expected later as part of its ongoing expansion. The company has already set up more than one lakh mobile towers and has plans to add nearly 97,500 more across India to strengthen coverage.

The service not only boosts call quality but also gives BSNL a chance to better compete with rivals who have long offered Wi-Fi calling.

Why this matters for users

For many Indians, poor mobile coverage inside homes or offices is still a daily frustration. This feature can bridge that gap without any additional cost. The launch underlines how Wi-Fi is becoming more central to mobile communication. While private operators had an early lead, BSNL stepping into the space means more users will now get access to stable calls without worrying about signal strength.
