In a move set to redefine the future of artificial intelligence, Openai and AMD have announced a groundbreaking 6 gigawatt (GW) multi-year, multi-generation partnership to power OpenAI’s next-generation AI infrastructure. The deal, unveiled on October 6, 2025marks one of the largest GPU deployments in history and will significantly scale OpenAI’s compute capacity over the coming years.
The agreement kicks off with an initial 1 GW deployment of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in the second half of 2026with further expansions leading up to the full 6 GW buildout. This massive deployment underscores the critical importance of hardware innovation in enabling more advanced and powerful AI models.
Strategic Alliance to Accelerate AI Progress
The collaboration builds on a strong history between AMD and OpenAI, which began with the MI300X GPUs and continued through the MI350X series. Under the new deal, the companies will jointly optimise hardware and software roadmaps, ensuring peak performance and efficiency for massive-scale AI workloads.
AMD will serve as a core strategic compute partnerhelping OpenAI meet skyrocketing demand for AI infrastructure. As part of the deal, AMD has issued warrants for up to 160 million shares of its common stock to OpenAI, vesting in stages as GPU deployments scale and performance milestones are achieved.
“Building AI for the Future”
AMD CEO Dr. Lisa are hailed the partnership as a “true win-win,” combining AMD’s leadership in high-performance computing with OpenAI’s pioneering work in generative AI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman echoed this sentiment, calling the deal “a major step in building the compute capacity needed to realize AI’s full potential.”
The partnership is also expected to deliver tens of billions of dollars in revenue for AMD and accelerate OpenAI’s infrastructure roadmap. CFO Jeans described the agreement as highly accretive to AMD’s earnings and strategically aligned with its long-term growth plans.
A Leap Toward AI at Global Scale
As demand for AI continues to surge across industries, the AMD-OpenAI alliance represents a bold step toward building the massive compute infrastructure needed to support future breakthroughs. Together, the two companies aim to unlock AI’s full potential — making advanced, large-scale AI tools more powerful, accessible, and beneficial for people worldwide.
