Emma Raducanu was forced to retire from her match against Ann Li in Wuhan. After a medical check-up by the WTA physio and tournament doctor, the 22-year-old had no choice but to withdraw.

She was down 6-1, 4-1, against Ann Li. Speaking post-match, Raducanu's opponent expressed: "First I want to wish Emma a fast recovery. Not sure what [happened], but [it] looked like she wasn't feeling good."

Li further commented: "But yeah, tough match last time, so I knew it was going to be tough, but I wish her to feel better, but yeah, I'm happy with my performance, I wasn't pretty solid the entire match."

Raducanu had started well against Li when she broke her opponent in the opening game. However, the British number one then started to struggle, appearing dizzy at times before medical assistance arrived.

Li went on to win the next game of the first set in less than half an hour. The world 46 ranking then began to dominate, forcing Raducanu into unforced errors.

"I feel like she's just going for broke and she does not want any long rallies here," Annabel Croft said on Sky Sports. Li quickly took control, winning six games consecutively before the world number 30 decided to call it a day.

Humidity on course was at 60 per cent, with the temperature around 35 degrees in challenging conditions for the players. "I do feel maybe should should have called for attention earlier in the match when it was clear that she wasn't feeling herself," Jonathan Overend said on Sky Sports during his commentary of the event.

Raducanu is the latest player to retire or withdraw from a tournament in recent weeks. Six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek criticised the "overwhelming" scheduling in tennis.

Ahead of Tuesday morning's debut at the Wuhan Open, Raducanu admitted that she found it tough to accept her recent results. She has suffered disappointing defeats to Barbora Krejcikova at the Korea Open and Jessica Pegula in Beijing.

"Yeah, I think it was hard for me," she said. "The last two matches that I lost, I had match points in both. And it's not something that's really happened to me before and then to happen twice in a week was pretty new to get my head around."

Raducanu is targeting a seeded position at the Australian Open. “It is a target of mine, I think for the next few weeks, I think is to try and be seeded in Australia and do do my best to be in that position,” she added.
