As Team India gears up for the much-anticipated limited-overs series against Australia, big news has come from the Indian cricket camp.
Rohit Sharma, who has been the captain of the Indian ODI team and led them to the Champions Trophy victory, has been dropped from the ODI captaincy. The BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar has confirmed that young Shubman Gill will take over the captain's role for the upcoming Australia series.
This decision marks the end of Rohit's reign as ODI captain, although he remains part of the squad. Alongside him, cricketing stalwart Virat Kohli will also feature, but neither of them is guaranteed a spot in the 2027 World Cup squad, with fitness and form playing a major role in future selections.
While this news alone is big, another announcement caught the attention of cricket fans and social media - Rohit Sharma's name appeared in the Jammu and Kashmir Ranji Trophy squad! With the Ranji Trophy season starting on October 15, the Northern team will face Mumbai in their opening match. Naturally, fans started buzzing, wondering if the veteran Rohit Sharma had switched teams, especially after he retired from Test cricket.
Here's where the twist comes in: It's not that Rohit Sharma is in the J&K squad!
Rohit Sharma included in Jammu and Kashmir's team is a completely different player, a young pace bowler born on September 5, 1994, in Jammu. He made his first-class debut back in the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy and has also played in the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournaments. Rohit Sharma is a fast bowler who forms an important part of J&K's pace attack, alongside players like Auqib Nabi, Umar Nazir, and the returning Umran Malik.
Meanwhile, the original Rohit Sharma from Mumbai is not part of the J&K squad and may still feature for Mumbai in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy if required.
So, while the name might have caused some confusion, cricket fans can breathe easy. The veteran Rohit Sharma remains loyal to Mumbai, and the Jammu and Kashmir team has their own Rohit Sharma to boost their pace attack this season.
As the Indian team moves forward with Shubman Gill's fresh leadership and the veterans adapting to new roles, the domestic circuit continues to add exciting stories - sometimes with surprising namesakes!
