In a recent interview, Chen said her decision was “based only on three factors,” adding: “I have never believed in the idea of a perfect match; it is all about compatibility”, ETtoday reported.

Chen said that her son, actor Jacky Heung, first met Bea at a fashion show in Paris, where he asked for her contact information but was turned down. The two later met again on a Chinese variety show, where they had more opportunities to interact. After the show ended, Jacky began pursuing Bea and frequently flew to Taiwan to see her.

Chen said she took a liking to Bea the first time they met. “She caught me when I tripped and almost fell over, and that left a warm impression,” she said.

The producer emphasized that social status played no role in her choice, saying what mattered most were Bea’s personal qualities. The first thing she noticed was her kindness and compassion. Before marriage, she had already adopted more than 70 stray cats, dogs, and birds.

Chen also admired her daughter-in-law’s filial piety and respect toward both families. She recalled that when the couple was deciding where to live after marriage, they initially struggled between Hong Kong and Taiwan, especially since Bea’s father was ill at the time.

“Bea wanted to spend more time with her father, so she told us she preferred staying in Taiwan after marriage,” Chen said. “I did not feel jealous about that. We said nothing when they chose Taipei, but she always comes to Hong Kong with the children during Lunar New Year, holidays, and birthdays. She is a very good daughter-in-law.”

Chen added that Bea’s personality resembles her own, devoted to family yet independent. “Any money we give her goes into our grandchildren’s fund,” she said, adding that Bea manages her family’s finances well with her own income.

“I do not understand why some mothers-in-law make things difficult for their daughters-in-law,” Chen said. “I believe one should treat them with love. The most important thing is that everyone is happy.”

Chen’s remarks have been widely praised by online viewers, with many saying Bea is fortunate to have such a supportive mother-in-law. Comments read: “A good mother-in-law only sees the strengths of her daughter-in-law,” and “The Heung family is strong enough that they do not need a daughter-in-law of equal status, what matters is compatibility.”

Chen also said she has never spoken ill of Bea and always tries to fulfill her wishes, even buying her several plots of land, according to 8days.

“[Bea] is now the owner of a very huge plot of land,” she said. Bea, 41, is best known for her role in the “Tiny Times” film series.

Bea and Jacky have been married for six years and have a four-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son.

Her father-in-law Charles, 77, founded Win’s Entertainment in the 1980s and later established China Star Entertainment, a leading Hong Kong-listed production company credited with launching the careers of cinema icons such as Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat, Stephen Chow, Andy Lau, and Johnnie To, according to Variety.

In 2022, his net worth was estimated at US$1.2 billion by the South China Morning Post.
